The different areas of the Reserve are varied and contrasting, in the north the steep limestone Mount Coronat is covered in forest for hundreds of hectares. In the south the edge of the Reserve is of slate, the sandy moors are dominated by brooms and dry grassland. Near the top of the granitic Mount Madres there is a series of peat bogs and lakes. Above 2300m the land is covered by carpets of alpine plants. Thus in just a few kilometers depending on the exposure and altitude one can pass from the Mediterranean aspect to the oceanic environment and on to the harshness of the almost arctic winter. There are 1100 species of plants recorded in the Reserve including 41 varieties of orchid. Also found are Izards, 14 species of bat, and marmots. All this contributes to the diversity of the Reserve.
